Fruits and vegetables are one of the most important foods for a person’s diet. However, these are also sometimes the most difficult to incorporate. As the old saying goes, “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away” and with that in mind, adding an apple and other fruits and veggies can bring about many health benefits.
The hard part is how does a person do this and actually enjoy it? Here are some helpful tips on how to get more fruits and veggies into your diet.

1. Smoothies

Smoothies are a great way to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Ice, almond milk/yogurt and any combinations of fruits and veggies all blended together can make a tasty smoothie snack. You could even add protein powder and turn it into a meal. Smoothies are great for breakfast and meals on the go.

2. Juicing

Juicing is a great way to get several fruits and vegetables serving in one sitting. You can add a wide range of fruits and veggies including apples, oranges, beets, spinach, kale, strawberries, pomegranates, mango, pineapple, banana and more! You do not get the fiber like you would get from eating the full fruit or vegetable, but you will get all of the needed vitamins and minerals. There are endless combinations and no limit on the amount fruit and veggies you can add.

3. Replacing sides with a fruit and veggies

French fries, potato chips or anything else fried or greasy can easily be replaced by fruits and veggies for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Blueberries instead of hash browns, orange slices instead of potato chips or sweet potato instead of french fries are all great ways to substitute the less healthy for the more healthy. There are varieties of ways to mix and match and prepare fruits and veggies so that there is never a boring meal.

4. Adding veggies to other dishes you like

This tip can go two different ways. First, you can add fruit and veggies on top of different dishes to add a bit of flavor to any meal. Add your favorite berry to yogurt or add an avocado to your sandwich or eggs. Being creative and willing to try new things, you never know what combination will delight your taste buds. The second way this can work for you would be to actually put the vegetables or fruits into the recipe. For instance substituting cauliflower for mashed potatoes or spaghetti squash for pasta can make for a veggie rich alternative.

5. Premade snack bags

One of the best ways to ensure that you are not only eating healthier but also eating the things that you like is by meal prepping. This gives you variety and the ability to pick and choose what vegetables and fruits you want to eat on the go. You can even freeze your fruit and help keep your lunch cold. By the time you are ready to eat, they will be thawed! A person will be less likely to go for non-healthy snacks if healthy options are brought along.

The best idea is to be adventurous! There are so many ways to dive in and try different takes on fruits and veggies. You do not have to be stuck in a rut or forced to eat boring food. Just like you found your favorite activities by trying and testing, you should try different fruits and veggies in a variety of ways. Variety is the spice of life, so do not limit yourself.
