How To Reduce BPA in your life

Bisphenol-A is commonly known as BPA and is used to produce strong resilient plastics. Sounds great! But did you know that BPA can also mimic the effects of estrogen in the human body? Because of this trait, it can act as an endocrine disruptors. There is a long still of defects that can occur when BPA is present. For example increased fat and risk of obesity, early puberty and the list goes on. Overexposure to BPA can act as an underlying but missed components in a variety of health factors.

The following recommendations can reduce your exposure to BPA:

1. Eating fresh, organic food and the least amount of processed foods possible. You will find BPA in processed food and canned food, as well as the plastics that these foods are stored in.

2. You want to utilize glass bottles rather than cans or plastic containers. This includes storing your food in glass containers and not warming up your food with plastic wrap. Also for you moms out there, use glass bottles with your babies.

3. Be careful with your receipts as they also contain BPA. Encourage your local stores to use BPA free receipts.

4. When shopping for your groceries, make sure that you find companies who are earth friendly, animal friendly, sustainable, certified organic and GMO-free. Also when redoing your home, try to use paint and vinyl floor coverings that are “green” and toxin-free.

5. Choose toys for your children that are made of natural material, especially toys that your child put in his or her mouth.

6. Use natural cleaning products or make your own.

8. Replace your vinyl shower curtain with a fabric one.

9. Replace feminine hygiene products with safer alternatives.

10. Avoid fragrance products – phthalates (another endocrine disruptor) are often used to help the product hold its fragrance longer.

11. Check your home’s tap water for contaminants and filer the water if necessary. You may also want an alternative to PVC pipes for your water supply.

12. Teach your children not to drink water from the garden hose.
